Gil
Gil was a spoken word artist and self proclaimed “bluesologist” who went on to become one of the most revered politicised artists of the 70s and 80s. His poetic style of delivery over loose, funky jams was regarded as a massive influence on the development of hip hop. Having spent a fair portion of the 90s and early 00s as a down and out dependent on the numerous vices he had warned the black youth against previously in his career, Gil re-emerged with a brilliant new album in 2010. Unfortunately, he couldn’t escape the ravages of past misdemeanours and passed away at the end of May. We paid tribute in our playlist a few weeks ago.
