Yma

Born in the Peruvian rainforest, Yma taught herself to sing by mimicking the calls of the local wildlife, eventually developing an unbelievable four (five according to some sources) octave vocal range.

Summer Playlist Bonanza!

Ok, it would appear that I have managed to build up a nice big backlog of playlists to share with you folks. So, without further ado….

Covers!

As promised, here’s last week’s cover versions only playlist!

Desmond

Well, due to the potent combination of some Spotify ‘improvements’ and my laziness there hasn’t been a new playlist post for an age. Time to rectify that with a bumper blog full of past playlists, although perhaps lacking a tad on the entertaining babble front.

ArtFusion – Gibson Street Gala

As part of this year’s Gibson Street Gala, ArtFusion will be populating Westbank Quadrant with over 30 artists’ stalls, murals and sculptures!

All The Young Nudes life drawing club is delighted to be a part of this – We love a chance to showcase our nudes! We’ll have a stall set up all day with sketches available to buy – The selection will feature work created at our Tuesday night drawing club. Anyone who has ever attended the club is invited to exhibit on the stall. Get in touch if you would like to do so.
We’ll have some ATYN sketchpads, badges, stickers and more goodies available to buy on the stall.
See you there!

Jimi

After a decade without Jimi, listening to Electric Ladyland and Axis: Bold As Love on loop has made it a happy week for my ears.

Kim

Last week saw Sonic Youth’s super talented bass player Kim Gordon turn a scarcely believable 58. I chucked one of my fave Youth tracks into the playlist as a wee tribute to a true musical heroine.

Goatfell

While you folks were all sketching away on Tuesday, I took a wee trip over to Arran to climb Goatfell and top up my sunburn (sometimes factor 30 isn’t enough, even in Scotland).

Spirited Away

And here’s Joanna and I’s sonic selection for ATYN 099. Sorry about the recent tardiness, I’ll be quicker and more productive on the writing front next week!

Miles

Here are the tunes that accompanied ATYN 098, apologies for the delay in providing them. You can give them a spin on Spotify here

Pancakes

“That old saying, you can have too much of a good thing. Really? This week it has been subjected to some pretty rigorous scrutiny, through the medium of pancakes”

Serge

“Serge Gainsbourg is all too often remembered for his anti-establishment antics and embodied as a caricature of the typical French stereotype, but the notoriety that resulted would not have been so pronounced had he not demonstrated such amazing talent during his lifetime.”

Snowdrops

“The snowdrops are out, so the transition from the icy ambient that has been a staple of the past few months to something a little bit more chirpy has begun.”

Mahler’s 5th Symphony

“For years, I had scoured the internet trying to find the origin of a lush strings interlude that formed the highlight of one of my favourite techno mixes . Lying in bed watching Visconti’s Death In Venice, it became clear that the entire film score was based around the piece I had been sounding out: Gustav Mahler’s 5th Symphony.”

December playlist (ATYN 086)

Hope you all enjoyed this one.

If you’re on Spotify, you can click through to the playlist here. Cool.

Wee Badgers

We’re running low on these babies but will order some more from Wee Badgers again soon. Super speedy delivery.

We love Bowie. And Bush.

I love to hear all the feedback re the music on Tuesday nights. We try our best to have at least one Bowie and one Kate Bush track per playlist… I think it’s a good rule to have in place really. I usually make the playlists though over the last few weeks we’ve had some featured DJs, Justin, Pete and Bruce. I’ll get those playlists up online asap! But for now you can have a listen to our 2009/2010 compilation on Spotify.

A play, a pint and a naked portrait

For those of you who missed it, check out the Scotsman’s take on ATYN here.

A wee snippet:
“The success of the classes at the Flying Duck is such that each Tuesday the focus of regulars is on perspective and shading rather than pints and packets of smokey bacon.

The event – titled All the Young Nudes – has become so popular that organisers are struggling to find space for all the budding artists. ”

The Sun made up their own version of events:

“The Flying Duck in Glasgow has seen takings SOAR after setting up the nude sketching sessions to liven up quiet Tuesday nights. The event is now such a hit organisers are struggling to fit in all their budding artists. And they even have a waiting list of more than 100 models who have volunteered to strip off for the classes.”  - HA!

Space Made Live

ATYN had the pleasure of being a part of Space Made Live earlier this year in conjunction with the West End Festival. The event was a visual, conceptual and contemporary artists’ exploitation of the interior of The Arthouse, an architecturally unique building in Glasgow. Everybody who had ever attending the drawing club was invited to exhibit work as part of this unique exhibition. We had a great response and hung the work of over 40 artists, many of them selling work over the weekend. We ran a live drawing session on the night which was a lot of fun for all.  An awesome event organised by design and online gurus Small Media Large.

Thanks

For the brilliant support and effort you all put in for the Space Made Live exhibition. Let’s do another one soon.
